On August 5, 2019, a hailstorm crossed Maple Grove with stones between one and two inches across. Wind gusts hit 78 miles per hour. Communities just west of the city took hail up to four inches. Roofs, siding, gutters, and windows all took damage that day.

Hail damage you cannot see from the driveway

Hail rarely punches a hole in a roof. It bruises the shingle. The impact crushes the mat under the surface granules and breaks the seal. Water finds that spot months later.

That is why a storm can wreck your roof and you will not know until the following spring. We inspect from the roof, not the ground, and we chalk test squares on each slope so the hit count is written down.

The Minnesota rule most storm pages ignore

Minnesota Statute 65A.10 says replacement cost policies have to cover repairs that meet current building code.

In 2025 the Minnesota Supreme Court applied that rule in Great Northwest Insurance Company v. Campbell. Hail damaged the shingles on a Saint Paul home. The old plank decking underneath did not meet code for the new shingles. The court held the insurer had to pay for the new sheathing, even though the sheathing itself was not damaged.
