Smoke damage is not one thing. A grease fire in the kitchen leaves a different residue than a smoldering fire inside a wall. Each type needs a different cleaning method, and using the wrong one sets the stain instead of lifting it.

Kiser Construction has cleaned up smoke damage in Maple Grove and the surrounding northwest metro since 2003. Our crews are IICRC certified.

Wildfire smoke is not the same as structure smoke

Minnesota homeowners started asking about this after 2023, when the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued a record 22 air quality alerts covering 52 days. 2025 was worse. The Minnesota DNR called it the Great Minnesota Smokeout. In July 2026, the Twin Cities metro saw its first “hazardous” air quality designation on record.

Those alerts covered Maple Grove along with the rest of the metro. Wildfire smoke that gets into your house is mostly an air quality problem. It settles on surfaces and loads up your furnace filter. Fresh filters, a duct cleaning, and time often take care of it.

Structure smoke is a different animal. It carries oils, acids, and soot that bond to surfaces and keep working on them. It corrodes metal, etches glass, and yellows paint. That damage does not clear on its own, and it gets worse the longer it sits.

If your home smells like smoke after a fire, even a small one, you are dealing with the second kind. In that case the cleanup runs alongside fire damage restoration rather than on its own.

The four kinds of residue

  • Dry smoke. From fast, hot fires. Powdery and easier to remove.
  • Wet smoke. From slow, smoldering fires. Sticky, thick, and hard to clean. Strong odor.
  • Protein smoke. From kitchen fires. Nearly invisible. Coats surfaces throughout the house and smells for months.
  • Fuel oil soot. From a furnace puff back. Greasy, dark, and it spreads through the whole duct system.

Protein smoke is the one that catches people out. There is almost nothing to see, so it gets ignored, and six months later the kitchen still smells wrong. If the fire started at the stove, our kitchen fire damage restoration page covers the cleanup and the rebuild.

Heavy residue is its own job. Soot is acidic, and it keeps damaging surfaces until it comes off. Our soot removal page explains how each surface gets cleaned.

Turn your HVAC system off

This is the single most useful thing you can do before we arrive. Running the furnace or air conditioner after a fire pulls soot into the return and pushes it through every room in the house. A small fire in one room becomes a whole-house cleanup.

Shut the system down and leave it off until the ducts have been checked.

Why odor comes back

Odor is the part homeowners underestimate. Smoke works its way into drywall, insulation, carpet pad, and the inside of your ductwork. Wiping the surfaces makes the room look clean and does nothing to the smell.

We seal or remove the porous materials holding the odor, clean the duct system, and then treat the air. That order matters. If the smell is already coming back after someone else cleaned, our smoke odor removal page explains why.

When the fire was bigger than the smoke

Smoke cleanup is often one part of a larger job. If the fire itself damaged your home, see fire damage restoration in Maple Grove. If firefighting water soaked floors or walls, see water damage restoration in Maple Grove.

Common questions

Can you clean smoke damage without a full rebuild?

Often, yes. It depends on how far the smoke traveled and what it landed on. The free inspection tells you which it is.

How fast do you respond in Maple Grove?

Our emergency line answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Call (612) 518-8852.

Do you clean smoke-damaged belongings, or only the building?

Both. Furniture, clothing, and household items can often be cleaned while the structural work happens. Our page on contents cleaning after a fire covers how.

Can you clean up wildfire smoke?

We can inspect it and tell you what it needs. Wildfire smoke is usually an air quality problem, not a structure problem, so the fix is often smaller than people expect.

Will insurance cover smoke damage?

Coverage questions belong with your agent and your adjuster. We document the damage with photos and a written scope and share it with your adjuster. We do not interpret your policy. Our insurance claim assistance page explains where our part starts and stops.
