Trees can fall any time of year, but the risk increases during severe weather season. High winds can easily bring an unhealthy tree down.

If a tree is at risk of falling and in close proximity to your house, it should be removed as soon as possible. But how do you identify a tree that is at risk of falling? Below are some of the signs.

7 Signs of a Dangerous Tree

  • Leaning
    • Leaning is the surest warning sign that a tree is ready to fall. Some trees have a natural lean, but leaning that wasn’t visible before indicates that the tree may be dying, the ground is no longer supporting it, or that the roots are damaged.
  • Storm damage
    • A tree that was damaged in a storm may have broken limbs, cracked branches, or a split trunk. If you notice any of these, have the tree assessed by a professional.
  • Decay, especially at the roots
    • This tells you that the trees structural support is damaged. The roots gather nutrients and water for the tree, but when they are damaged and can’t do their job, roots can die, eventually killing the tree too. Damage to roots can be caused by mowing, animals, construction, landscaping, or drought.
  • Fungus
    • Fungus on a tree appears as mushroom-like spores and soft bark, usually near the base of the tree or roots. Fungus causes the tree to decay.
  • Tree is oddly shaped
    • This may be an indication that the tree is losing strength, caused by a storm or improper pruning.
  • Tree is hollow
    • Like us, trees can get cavities. These cavities can be caused by many factors and should be addressed promptly. A hollow tree is a weak tree.
  • Infestation of insects or invasive species
    • Insects like to nest in dead or hollow parts of a tree where they multiply and cause further damage. Trees can also be susceptible to invasive species, such as emerald ash borer. These insects will feed on the tree and eventually kill it.

Need a Tree Removed?

Ask family, friends, or neighbors if they have a tree service referral for you. If not, do some research to find a reputable, local tree service that can safely and effectively remove dangerous trees from your property.

For future reference, trees that will grow to be large should be planted at least 15-20 feet away from your home.
